Overview

Restify is a digital wellness app that incentivises users to reduce screen time by rewarding phone-free moments with B3TR tokens. Through gamification, social challenges, and intuitive progress tracking, the app encourages long-term behaviour change.

My role focused on UX research, interaction design, and prototyping

HIGHLIGHTS

Rewarding screen-free time, building healthier digital habits

CONTEXT

A Mental Health Crisis

A growing problem associated with excessive smart phone usage

Through desktop research, I found that excessive smartphone usage is increasingly linked to mental health issues such as anxiety, stress, and sleep disturbances. Studies from organisations like the WHO and academic research highlight this as a growing global concern, reinforcing the need for digital detox solutions like Restify

1.0 Making the case for digital detoxing

PROBLEM SPACE

Making Downtime Rewarding

Researching competitor productivity apps

As part of the problem space research, I utilised UX qualitative research methods such as user interviews, affinity mapping, and questionnaires to understand user behaviours, motivations, and pain points related to smartphone overuse. These insights shaped the design direction for Restify, ensuring it aligns with real user needs

2.0 UX Qualitative Research

Users want to reduce screentime

Respondents want to create boundaries but struggle with distractions

Simplicity is essential

A frictionless onboarding experience and intuitive UI are necessary

Engagement is critical for retention

Users are more likely to stay engaged if the app includes gamification and rewards

Actionable insights, not just data

Users need clear insights and recommendations on how to improve

2.1 Key Takeaways

FEATURES & PRIORITISATION

The Product Roadmap

Identifying where user needs and business objectives align

While defining Phase 1, I streamlined the focus to essential MVP features, ensuring a balance between usability and impact. The final version includes core functionalities like signup and settings, alongside key features such as session tracking, rewards integration, and progress insights to drive engagement

3.0 Project Goals & Features Phasing

INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE

Mapping the Core User Experience

Designing flows in order to create an intuitive and useful product

With the MVP features defined, I created a sitemap outlining primary, secondary, and tertiary navigation to structure the app effectively.

I first established primary navigation, focusing on the core user actions: starting a session, claiming rewards, tracking progress, and accessing insights. From there, I expanded each section, ensuring a logical, intuitive flow between

4.0 Initial Site Map

Identifying essential user flows

I quickly identified one of the core user flows as being the user onboarding experience and logging their first activity

The goal was to ensure users could actively engage with the app immediately after download, and then easily log their first activities to engage with the apps core functionality.

4.1 User Flow 1: Restify Session & Sign in

Flow 1: Restify Session & Sign in

To avoid cumbersome sign up/ log in screens immediately after opening an app the first time, I made it possible to engage with the apps features of logging a symptom or adding a diary entry, without having to do this until the end.

Making a flow where the user can immediately engage aims to minimise uninstall rates and user frustration while onboarding.

4.2 Task Flow 1: Restify Session & Sign in

Claiming B3TR Rewards

One of the other key user flows is the process of claiming B3TR rewards after a successful Restify session. To make this process as easy and seamless as possible, multiple flows were designed to guide users toward claiming their rewards. These also acted as reminders, ensuring users didn’t miss out on their earned B3TR tokens

4.3 User Flow 2: Claiming B3TR Rewards

Flow 2: Claiming Rewards

One example of this flow is through the dashboard, where users can claim their rewards directly to their wallet from the session summary, ensuring a frictionless experience while reinforcing engagement with the app’s core functionality

4.4 Task Flow 2: Claiming B3TR Rewards

WIREFRAMES

Initial Screen Concepts

Integrating UX research with initial ideas for visuals and navigation

The initial designs organically emerged from prior research, focusing on Restify’s core functionality and a minimalist user experience. The home screen is intentionally simple, featuring a large, inviting button at its centre, enabling users to effortlessly start a Restify session with a single tap

5.0 Initial Wireframe Sketches

Keep it simple and on task

While the home screen remained minimal, secondary screens like the wallet and dashboard could display more information. Bottom sheets were used to reduce clutter while hinting at additional content, ensuring users could explore further without overwhelming the core experience

VISUAL DESIGN

A distraction free experience

Designing an interface to support the primary action

I focused on designing a streamlined interface centred around a single core function, ensuring a minimal, distraction-free experience that prioritises ease of use.

Every design decision was made to support this primary action, removing unnecessary complexity and creating an intuitive, frictionless flow for users to engage effortlessly

PROTOTYPING

Prototyping

A clickable prototype to test with users

To test the design, I built a clickable prototype, allowing users to experience the core flows and interactions across all app screens.

I then conducted usability testing with participants from the original UX research, gathering insights on ease of use, feature engagement, and any pain points, ensuring the design met user expectations

7.0 Clickable Prototype

7.1 App Screens

7.2 Screen Mockup

7.3 User Test Feedback

Feedback is crucial for improvement

Gathering feedback early is crucial to identify pain points, refine the user experience, and ensure the app meets real user needs before launch. It revealed that Restify’s simplicity, rewards system, and clean UI were well-received. Areas like onboarding clarity, customisation, and any information on why Restify should be used, were areas that could be improved upon.

ITERATIONS

Implementing Feedback

Clarifying the Why

User feedback indicated some confusion around the core purpose of Restify, with users unsure if the goal was simply earning tokens or fostering healthier habits. To address this, I implemented an About page with a simple FAQ, clearly explaining Restify’s mission, rewards system, and long-term benefits

8.0 Streamlining Navigation

FINAL DESIGNS

Final Prototype App

Lowfi clickable prototype

The low-fidelity prototype was developed to outline screen logic and core UI structure, focusing on functionality rather than visual finesse. The goal was to quickly communicate user flows and interactions, ensuring the design aligned with key app functionalities. While the screens lacked polish, the developers were able to use this rough prototype as a foundation to build and iterate rapidly

9.0 Final Designs

Project Takeaways:

Design for Speed, Then Polish

Focusing on structure and user flows first ensured smoother collaboration

Simplicity Drives Engagement

A minimal, intuitive interface makes it easier for users to adopt new habits

Early Feedback Saves Time

Low-fi prototype tests helped identify usability issues before investing in final designs

Clarity of Purpose is Crucial

Users need to instantly understand why an app exists and how it benefits them
