WilkinsonEyre 2022 - Building and rendering a VR building walkthrough

My Role

UX Designer/ Architect - Visual Design, 3D Modelling & Rendering, Building Design

Timeline & Status

3 Months

Overview

While at WilkinsonEyre, I spearheaded the idea and execution of an immersive 3D experience designed to help clients better understand architectural designs. This supplemented traditional 2D drawings with a spatial VR walkthrough, which was then included as a billable service within our deliverables.

My role as UX Designer/Architect focused on visual design, 3D modelling & rendering, and building design

HIGHLIGHTS

An immersive VR experience to explain a complex space

CONTEXT

Visualising complex spaces

A design which needed to be experienced to be understood

The VR experience was invaluable for showcasing unconventional designs that weren’t effectively represented in 2D. Traditional drawings often failed to convey scale, depth, and spatial relationships, making it harder for clients to visualise designs. It also allowed us as designers to identify strengths, weaknesses, and necessary refinements.

VISUAL DESIGN

Creating an Intuitive Interface

Establishing a clear navigation system to move around the model

The VR experience featured seamless navigation through gaze-based or controller-triggered icons, enabling intuitive movement between spaces. The central main menu provided an overview for project-wide access, while links were limited to key or adjacent areas to maintain clarity. Every space included a ‘home’ link. Accurately scaled proportions ensured a human-scale experience that aligned with real-world expectations.

From Innovation to Revenue

The project received positive client feedback, enhancing presentations to the development board with immersive visuals and intuitive navigation.

The VR experience and updates became a staple deliverable which generated extra revenue as a separately billed service and also won WilkinsonEyre additional work from the client.
